While Bollywood filmmakers run around the globe looking for exotic locales to shoot their films, Hollywood directors in fact turn to India when they want to shoot 'abroad'. We bring to you the 10 best Hollywood movies that were shot in India:

10. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Released in 2011, the movie is about British retirees who come to India for vacation, where they stay at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Starring Judie Dench, Maggie Smith and Dev Patel - most parts of the movie was shot in Jaipur and Udaipur.
Indian locations might have been done to death in Bollywood movies - the same is not true for foreign filmmakers. And they're welcome!

9. The Darjeeling Limited

The movie is about three brothers meeting together in India where they come to fulfill their spiritual needs. Starring Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman - the movie was extensively shot in Udaipur, the airport there and also Jodhpur.

8. A Mighty Heart

Remember Daniel Pearl - the Wall Street Journal journalist who was kidnapped and killed by Al Qaida? His widow, Martane Pearl, wrote a book about it which was adapted into a movie, with Angelina Jolie playing her. Although the depicted location in the movie is Karachi, Pakistan, once again the crew did not get permission to shoot there and had to make do with Pune and Mumbai.

7. Slumdog Millionaire

One of the more obvious choices, but Danny Boyle did make the movie in India. From the slums of Mumbai to the railway stations - it was a well-made movie. Of course, there were a lot of criticisms about the poor depiction of India and Indians, but that didn't stop the movie from its haul of Oscar trophies that year.

The 1983 James Bond movie too had a couple of scenes shot in India. Roger Moore, playing Bond, was shown infiltrating a palace. This palace is located in Udaipur. Other than that, the movie also featured Kabir Bedi - who had a bit role.

5. The Bourne Supremacy

The second of the Bourne series - 'The Bourne Supremacy' (2004) was shot in a number of locations, one of them being the picturesque beach state of India, Goa. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) goes there with his girlfriend after the events of the first movie. But when his past catches up with him, we get to see a high-speed chase through the lanes of a Goan town.

4. Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol

'Mission Impossible 4' was also shot in India - to be specific, the explosive climax of the movie was shot in the by-lanes of Bora Bazaar, Mumbai. Besides that, a couple of scenes were also shot in the Sun TV office, Bengaluru. The movie also had another Indian connect - Anil Kapoor playing a business tycoon.

3. Eat Pray Love

Based on Elizabeth Gilbert's novel by the same name, the protagonist goes to Italy, India and Indonesia to eat, pray and love - as the name suggests. So Julia Roberts, who played the lead, is shown searching for spirituality in India. The crew shot the scenes at the Ashram Hari Mandir in Pataudi, Haryana.

2. Zero Dark Thirty

Although the movie is about hunting down Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan - the crew did not get the permission to shoot there (no surprises, huh?). So Kathryn Bigelow got her crew to Chandigarh and recreated the scenes where Navy SEALs encounter the criminal mastermind. The shooting locations in Chandigarh were the Punjab Engineering College premises in Sector 12 as well as the DAV College canteen in Sector 10.

1. The Dark Knight Rises

To think some of the shots from this much loved movie was shot in India! Yes, Christopher Nolan was in India for a visit before - and he was enamored by Rajasthan and its beautiful locations. So when he started working on 'The Dark Knight Rises', he chose to shoot the jail escape scene of Batman at the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. Cool, huh?
