Back in the 1970s a single aficionado would travel the world to individually inspect the root base of Burl walnut trees (or "Burr" walnut) to be used for the exclusive use by Rolls-Royce in their motor cars. Rolls Royce is Famous for its wooden interiors .An expert with a very trained eye would scour properties for a single tree, whose mass root base would serve 1 years supply of interior wood to the famous car marque. In 1975, in Milan Italy one such tree was found and cut down and only the root "ball" shipped back to Crewe in the UK for Rolls-Royce. The root base is then cleaned and prepared for slicing into hundreds of millimetre thin sheets know as veneers. These veneers are meticulously sorted in matching grains as all cars were fitted with unique matching sets. The veneers are kept pressed, de-humidified and dried and will not be ready for use for months to follow.

The grain match is a meticulous process. If you look in a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, you will see the wood grain on the burl walnut of the 2 left doors are a mirror image of the 2 right doors. Similarly, the dash is split down the middle like an open book with the left and right sides being "split" again to create a 4 piece mirror image from left to right. Each interior piece of wood has veneers applied to teak base units with mahogany edges and accents. These were all made entirely by hand, Cut and glued under an experts eye. Each piece is finished with no less than 15 coats of clear lacquer, hand rubbed between each coat and delicately buffed to a high polish finish on the last coat. Completed, it has a mirror finish and held up to the light it is as smooth as glass without any unevenness or grain depth showing.

There is no wonder the cost of these cars were astronomical. These colours Are Unique .I bet you never find These colours in any other cars.
At the Park-Ward Motor Museum, this wood finishing process is duplicated using current lacquer technology to provide a finish that is exacting to Rolls-Royce standards of the era but with the durability of modern technology.
